NITECORE SCL10 2-IN-1 SMART CAMERA LIGHT REVIEW

The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light on the Hasselblad X1D II

LET’S TALK ACCESSORIES TODAY, WITH THIS NITECORE SCL10 2-IN-1 SMART CAMERA LIGHT REVIEW

The advent of LED-based lighting solutions for still photography is relatively recent and made working with continuous lighting much easier than ever before. In particular, the great size-to-power ratio of LED allows for very small and light lighting solutions: it was only a matter of time before Nitecore, a brand known for their flashlights and headlamps, as well as for their expertise in batteries and battery chargers, entered the game.

The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light is a product designed for the photographer on the move, who needs a small but powerful light source readily available. Nitecore, however, went one step further, creating a device that is both a handholdable LED light, an on-camera light and a power bank, all in one. Let’s see how they did in this Notecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light review!

Disclaimer: At the time of writing, I am not affiliated with Nitecore in any way. I am a professional photographer looking for the best equipment for my work, I buy all my gear with my hard-earned cash and I don’t get paid by anyone to write articles for my blog. For this article, however, Nitecore has been kind enough to send me a free SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light to review, and I want to thank them for the opportunity. Of course, that won’t influence my findings in any way.

BUILD, SIZE AND WEIGHT
The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light is beautifully built; its aero grade aluminium body feels extremely solid in the hand and exudes confidence. The front screen, where the LEDs are, also feels very solid, with no plays or moving parts of sorts. The small LCD on the back of the device, on the other hand, had some play (on my sample copy at least). This didn’t affect its functionality in any way of course, but it felt slightly less well-built than the rest of the device.

The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light is pretty small, measuring just 134x65x14.7mm (5.28”x2.56”x0.58”), and is pretty light as well, weighing just 222.5gr (7.85oz).

For comparison, an iPhone 11 measures 150,9×75,7×8,3mm, weighing 194gr. The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light is a bit smaller, a bit taller and slightly heavier than an iPhone 11, and therefore is definitely pocketable.

Besides being handholdable, the Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light features a ¼” screw hole, allowing it to be mounted pretty much on any standard support that we have in our studios, be it a stand or a clamp. Not only that, but Nitecore supplies a Hot Shoe Mount with the Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light, allowing you to put it directly on top of your camera using the flash’s hot shoe.

IN USE: A LIGHT & AN USB POWER BANK IN ONE
When used as a light, the Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light indeed offers some smart features, as its name claims. First of all, it features a dimmer, which you can use to graduate the intensity of the light emitted by its 96 LED between 5% and 100% power. Maximum brightness output is 800 lumens, which is pretty strong for the size. Second, with the Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light you can modify the light temperature as well, in a range between 2500K and 6300K.

I didn’t check the light’s intensity and colour temperature with a spectrometer or any similar measuring device, so I can’t vouch for the dimmer’s & colour scale’s accuracy, but I can definitely say that the light’s temperature & intensity are visibly changing, and that changing the one doesn’t affect the other.

Leveraging their battery expertise, Nitecore built the SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light to be a USB power bank at the same time. With a capacity of 10.000 mAh, the SCL10 can power its own LED lights non-stop for 3.5 hours at full output, and for a whopping 70 hours at minimum power. Used as a power bank, it offers both USB-C and USB-A output, with a maximum output power of 18W (5V-2.4A / 9V-2A / 12V-1.5A).

Overall, the Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light performed as intended, and while its reliability remains to be seen it feels like it can take a beating.

CONCLUSIONS
With the SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light, Nitecore created what I consider to be a brilliant small device for us traveling photographers. In a package not much bigger than a smartphone, you have a powerful LED light, with variable intensity and colour temperature, as well as a 10.000 mAh power bank which you can use to recharge your cellphone and put back some juice in your camera battery on the go, provided your camera supports USB charging of course. And all that, for a pretty decent price. The Nitecore SCL10 2-in-1 Smart Camera Light found a permanent place in my camera bag, for those times when I need to do some light painting in the field at night, as an emergency light, and for when I need some juice when I am far from civilization. Highly recommended!
